Introduction

The Canon EF-S 17-85mm f4~5.6 IS USM was reported in August 2004 as general-purpose zoom for Canon DSLRs and EF-S lens mounts; compatible models include the EOS 300D/Rebel, the EOS 350D/Rebel XT, the EOS 400D/Rebel XTi, and EOS 30D. EF-S lenses are not perfect with the EOS 10D, nor any Canon bodies with bigger sensors including the EOS 1D Mark III or 1D Mark II.

The Canon EF-S 17-85mm conveys a 5x optical zoom proportion with an equal focal scope of 27-136mm on a 35mm or full-outline body. This offers both wide edge and sensible telephoto scope, and a more valuable general reach than the financial backing EF-S 18-55mm unit lens regularly packaged with compatible camera bodies. The optical development comprises of 17 components in 12 bunches. The EF-S 17-85mm additionally includes Image Stabilization which guarantees up to 3stops of compensation against camera shake.

Technical Specifications

Sharpness:

Optical execution is likewise not L-class, but rather sensible. Focus sharpness is great at all central lengths and enhances almost no when halted down. Some corner delicateness is available at most central lengths and openings.

Chromatic Aberration:

At the 17 mm central length, paying little mind to the diaphragm, the aberration is at an abnormal state of 0.13 to 0.14%. The circumstance shows signs of improvement at other central lengths when we stop down the lens to F8.0. Be that as it may, notwithstanding the slightest tragic blend of 50 mm and F32 diaphragm, the chromatic variation is 0.06%, which is a long way from a satisfactory 0.04% result.

Shading or ”Vignetting”:

Vignetting of the Canon 17-85 mm, communicated in stops, is high at full aperture and especially without camera correction at focal length 17 mm. At different openings, you will seldom be irritated by it practically speaking. With in-camera correction empowered on the Canon 650D, vignetting is less at all central lengths, however, will, in any case, be unmistakable every so often.

Distortion:

The distortion that the lens appears, communicated as a rate, is high at all central lengths with an amazing top at 17 mm. The distortion is so incredible at a central length of 17 mm that the skyline gets to be arched when it is not set in the focal point of the picture. Distortion could be battled by software (such as Photoshop, Lightroom, PTLens, DxO).

Buy this lens if:

By and by, I’ve observed it be helpful in a wide range of circumstances. For instance, the ultra-wide edge is ideal for landscapes.

Another point of interest of a wide-edge lens can be seen where the picture taker has restricted space to work with. For instance, in the event that you were shooting a man sitting in a little zone, you would have the capacity to get the entire individual into the photograph, yet still, be situated very near them as you take the shot.

This is likewise helpful for times when you’re shooting bigger items or creatures, for example, stallions and elephants. You should not be extremely far away to get the entire creation into the shot.

The Canon EF-S 17-85mm F4-5.6 USM lens offers Image Stabilization (additionally split adjustment). One of the benefits of this is you can hand-hold the camera at a much slower screen speed than would somehow have been conceivable. For instance, when capturing moderate water motion, it is conceivable to hand-hold the camera for up to 2 seconds with no indication of camera shake.

Since it is a genuine USM lens, it will focus speedier than a no-USM. This is helpful for times when you’re catching a moving item like a kid on the run or a bird in flight.

Don’t Buy this lens if:

On the off chance that you shoot principally towards the telephoto end, this lens will remunerate you with fabulous results, however in the event that your advantage tends more towards the wide edge end of the range and you would prefer not to shoot RAW, then it might well be a smart thought to turn away at this point.

If there were to be a detriment of this lens, it would need to be the way that it’s not very simple to accomplish a blurred background. If you mean to do a considerable measure of flower photos, and you need to single out one blossom in the sharp center against a blurred background of blossoms straightforwardly behind it, then I prescribe utilizing a large macro lens.

Conclusion

The EF-S 17-85mm F4-5.6 USM is a lens that guarantees numerous things. It is unquestionably an extremely versatile zoom with a long zoom range and a picture stabilizer that can spare the day by and large. Be that as it may, the assembly quality is to some degree disillusioning and optically it is likewise something of a blended sack.

The lens is sharp in the picture center all through the reach yet at the wide end the extreme corners fail to impress anyone. The 17mm setting likewise experiences rather amazing distortions and rather weighty vignetting at F4. At long last chromatic aberrations are not generally something to rave about.

One More Thing.

So toward the day’s end, the lens is a bit superior to the cheap EF-S 18-55mm, however, it can’t generally contend with the new EF-S 18-55m f/3.5-5.6 IS.

  • It’s interested to have come across the review, because I was looking into alternate lenses for my Canon xTi. This lens seems like it would fit my intended use, since I tend to shoot more distant landscape photos during my hiking adventures. However, it’s a bit steeper in price than I was hoping to pay. I was looking at the EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6. How would you compare these two lenses?

    • Thanks Eris for dropping by, the Canon 10-18mm is an ultra wide lens suitable for architecture & indoor photography and works well for landscape too but it’s short focal lenght is a drawback, so if long focal lenght really matters to you then go for the Canon 17-85mm it will be an excellent choice for landscape shots.
