Most of the parents seen their kids, even very younger kids, pick up a mobile phone and handle them easily, it seems that they were born knowing all about digital devices. I think that most kids age 5 or older are ready for a digital camera; you can encourage them to be involved in such a great hobby. Offering them a decent, cheap camera will, of course, let them take photos on summer vacation with their family and friends. And the important thing is you are providing them with the right tool to make Them Love an Amazing Hobbylearn, and gain knowledge about photography.
In this post, I’ll provide you with a brief sampling of cheap digital cameras for kids that I think will serve ages between 5-12 with performance and durability. Then I’ll go through some cameras that are more appropriate for teenagers. I tried to add different cameras types (point and shoot, Polaroid, waterproof, selfie, etc.). The prices mentioned in the post are only valid on 8-2017.

So many cameras and so many age limits – this is NOT a great idea. As a child aged (8) I had a pretty advanced camera gifted by my Photographer Father – a British make Ensign Ful Vue Flex (TLR).
I would recommend a) simple Point & Shoot like the Nikon CoolPix or the Fuji Instax – for Kids aged 4 to 9.
b) a starter DSLR or a Bridge P&S for Kids aged 10 to 15. c) a Prosumer DSLR for Kids aged 16 – 70.
Why this recommendation??
I have Grandchildren and from age 2 to 3 I have seen them run the iPad and watch their favorite songs or videos. These Kids are extremely SMART with 3 to 4 times our Intelligence when we were their age.
I gave my old P&S to my 3 year old Grand Daughter. She was an instant Photographer taking some great photos in the Green mode. She would make us pose too for portrait shots.
Thanks for sharing your experience & recommendations, we might consider adding those into the list.
This is a great list! I have been looking for a camera to suit my soon to be 9-year old. She has been snapping photos since she was 5 using whatever tool would let her take a pic. She’s now in selfie/snapchat mode, though. Would you recommend starting with the 5-8 year range to gauge her seriousness about photography or a camera suited to her age range?
Hi Indasa
thanks for your comment, As for your little princess, there are three things to consider. The first, she seemed interested and doing great, the second my list does not has that sharp age limits, the third , girls are more talented than boys in this age and they are growing fast. So I recommend that you pick up one from the list 8-12 years as your budget allows. Hope you all the best and for your princess I wish her happy shooting.
