  • As a Canon fan searching the internet for reviews and recommendations of lenses, I came across your post. As I’m a bit of an avid landscape photographer I was looking for a new lens suitable for shooting landscapes. Unfortunately I can’t buy the 10-22mm wide angle lens, as I have a full frame camera and that’s an EF-S mounted lens. The 17-40mm looks like the one for me as it’s a bit cheaper than the 14mm prime lens. Thanks for the info.

  • Nice review! I like Canon 10-22 mm f/3.5-4.5 and I am using it all the time. With Lee filter for landscape, this lens takes great quality photos. It is a great lens in the dark room, I often use it for concert photography too and it works perfectly.

    Could you recommend what is best for street photography (narrow street or alley)?

  • thanks for the review! Ive recently got into videography and photography for shooting my music videos and promo pics, it was too expensive to have other people do it, so I learned it myself! the canon 10-22 seems to be the perfect fit for me, might need to look into purchsing it.

  • Those photos captured with those lenses look great!

    I remember when I bought my Nikon D50 way back in 2006, for years I just stuck with the standard 18-55mm kit lens. This was fine for a long time, but eventually I really wanted a telephoto lens with a long zoom range, and I bought one that goes all the way up to 300mm. I can take completely different photos with that lens. It’s quite amazing really.

    I am considering buying my first camera very soon and also trying to decide which lens I should get. I want to start up a YouTube channel but am on a budget right now. I’ve heard that it’s best to save money on the camera and splash out on a good lens. Is this true?

  • I have been wanting to upgrade to a DSLR for a long time.I hesitate because I have been using a point and click forever and I still don’t know what all the features do. I do however research them from time to time and where I live in Idaho there are a lot of really amazing scenic places to take pictures. Knowing which lenses to get for those kinds of shots is going to be helpful.

    I also like that you offer free photography classes online! It’s definitely a hobby I am looking to get better at.

  • I love the way you described every single lens and described exactly what they could be used for. I like the hook used in the beginning where it said it’s the most important piece of equipment for the camera. I looked at the pictures that each lens took and was surprised as to what they could do. There are not many places we could see what kind of pictures each type of lens takes. One thing could improve upon is making the pictures all the same size and position them to the right of each of the articles of the lens that you’re describing. That way people could read the statistics about the lens and then see a quick photo. Another thing to do is provide a small preview of the photo and have people zoom into it when they click it, that when they get a feel of the real resolution that the picture is. I’m not saying that the formatting that you have is bad, I’m just merely making a suggestion to what I would do. Other than that excellent work.

    Thanks for the write-up. I currently own a Canon EOS Rebel XSI with the 18-55mm, 55-250mm and 75-300mm lenses. They are all great lenses but I have to say after reading your article the one that I am missing to round out my rig is the EF 17-40mm f/L.

    Do you know if the the 17-40mm f/L lenses has the ability to blur the background when capturing say portrait photos?

      Thanks for passing by, you have a great collection of lenses but actually Canon 17-40 mm will not be a good choice for portrait photos as its aperture is F/4 which is not that wide, check here my review of the cheapest Canon lenses you will find the first lens in the review is Canon 50 mm F/1.8 which is a perfect choice for portrait photos as it’s wide aperture also it is inexpensive lens.

  • My daughter loves photography and she wants a cannon D5 for her birthday. Is this lens compatible with that camera? If its not do you have a recommendation of a lens I can get for her? We live in a rural area next to a lake and she love to take nature shots. Is this lens good for that?

    • Hello, Canon 5D is a professional camera with full frame digital sensor 35 mm, any lens with EF mount will fit Canon 5D, so in this review all the lenses compatible for Canon 5D except the first lens canon 10-22 mm, so choose any of the other 4 lenses, they all are amazing lenses for landscapes :).

  • Hi Ehab,
    It really looks like you’ve had your work cut out for you with these reviews! After taking a closer look at all of them, I’d say my choice would be the Cannon-EF.
    Reason being, I like having the freedom to take better night shots in case the occasion arises. Water resistant always helps too, you never know what mother nature will want to dump on you while you’re out taking shots!

  • I’ve been looking into upgrading the lens on my SLR for a few months now but I must say it gets awfully confusing at times. I notice here that you indicate that this lens is only suitable for certain cannon models and not many of them seem to be SLR. Is there anywhere I can go online for free tutorials with this sort of thing?

      Actually Canon makes two types of lens mounts: EF-S and EF, The EF-S mount Canon introduced it as a mid-range (DSLR) models, including the Rebel EOS, & introduce EF lenses for it’s professional grade (DSLR) Cameras.The thing you should know that if you have the camera lens mount with EF lens mount so your camera can accept both types of lenses, But if your camera have EF-S mount so it will accepts only EF-S Lenses.

      So as you solved this conflict & knew what is your lens mount compatibility you can easily choose Canon lenses or other brands for Canon mount

  • A lot of the pictures look kind of blurred I wasn’t really too impressed to be honest. I don’t know too much about photography but I do appreciate photographers capturing some great scenes around the world. I don’t know if the pictures came out like that because of a filter that was put on or because the image that was used was expanded too much and not a high quality image that you downloaded.

    • Hey Brandon, Actually the photos are re-sized by word-press that’s why you see it little blurry, before every sample picture i wrote a note that you have to click on the picture so you can see it in actual size & you will find it very clear, anyways thanks for your feedback & i just added NOTE in the beginning of the review regarding this issue.

  • Hello Ehab! First of all I’d like to say that Canon is may favorite brand. Not only as photo cameras but when have to choose a printer. As many of us for everyday I use iPhone to capture pics mainly for notes or reminders as we almost forget how to make notes by pencil. My son enjoy photo cameras and recently he sent me and pictures from sky. Apparently captured by drone.

    I didn’t realize just how Cannon lenses could create such Amazing landscape photo effects 🙂

    My mom loves taking landscapes, and I reckon one of these Cannon lenses would make an ideal gift for her at Christmas time!

    The EF 14 mm Prime Lens sounds like a great choice because the specs are Awesome, and I like the idea of fast auto-focus too!

    Great reviews you’ve got there. I’m not a professional photographer and my camera lies idle for months sometimes- that reminds me I should remove the rechargeable cell today, its been months already- but I certainly can tell what a quality lens looks like. What you have reviewed are amazing pieces. What does unit f in aperture range mean?

    • Hey Boni,

      F-Stops are how aperture size is measured. A small F-Stop such asf/2:0 means the aperture will be wide open and lots of light allowed into the camera. A higher F-Stop like f/32 gives a small aperture that doesn’t let so much light in.

    For me, it is crystal clear which lens I have to buy first if I have decent camera body (Preferable Canon)…

    You also made a nice description of every lens, I am surprised how fast things also in the photgraphy world evoluating…

    For me, the best thing to understand the explanation you give on your page is the example pictures!

    Cause I don’t know anything about photography, lenses and the terminology.

    But together with examples I understood things better and it are all very beautiful pictures…

  • I’m a landscape-freak!

    And I’m planning on stepping over to Canon (I had a Nikon D5500 that I sold recently).

    Taking landscapes is far my favorite way to use my cam so I need to get a Canon landscape lens.

    What do you think how big is the difference between the two ends of the scale, the 10-22 and 16-35 lenses?

    Which one of the four would you recommend for a hobby photographer?

      First of all these 2 lenses are amazing for landscape shoots.

      But actually the differences between them depends on what other kind of photos you wanna capture beside landscape shots, if you wanna shoot photos for these categories ( indoor photography,architectural photography,Funny Carton photos) sure 10-22 mm will be your choice because of it’s ultra wide angle 10 mm, but if you wanna capture some (portrait,close up) sure the 16-35 mm will be your choice, because of it’s aperture F/2.8 which will gives you amazing blur background in portrait photos while in the 10-22 mm the maximum aperture is F/3.5 at 10 mm & F 4.5 at 22 mm which will not give you good portrait photos, the 16-35 mm falls in “L” Category which is a “professional lens” & it’s price is around U.S $ 1,500, while the 10-22 mm is U.S $ 600.

      Finally after reading this now you can make your decision, but in both decisions i’m sure that you will get amazed by your photos result 🙂

  • I find your site very informative and I learned a lot about Canon cameras and how to take great pictures. I like your lesson on how to use the camera and its features. I pretty much only knew zoom and take picture button. Plus, I find myself taking pictures with my cellphone more than anything. However, I think professional photography is absolutely beautiful and using a professional camera is the best. Thanks for the lesson and showing me ways to take great pictures.
